Deepika Padukone says “I was sometimes suicidal”

Deepika Padukone, who opened up about her battle with depression in 2014, often shared her struggle to overcome overwhelming thoughts.

At a recent event in Mumbai, she recalled how she overcame depression with the help of medical professionals and the support of her family.

The Tamasha The star said she “even felt suicidal at times”, news agency ANI reported.

Thanking her mum Ujjala Padukone, Deepika said, “I give all the credit to my mum for recognizing the signs and symptoms because it happened out of the blue.”

She added: “I was at the peak of my career and everything was fine, so there was no reason or no apparent reason why I should have felt the way I felt, but I would crumble for no reason.

“There were days when I just didn’t want to wake up, I slept because sleep was an escape for me, I was sometimes suicidal.”

Recalling her ordeal of depression, Deepika said at the event, “My parents live in Bengaluru and whenever they visit me, even now when they visit me, I always show courage like if everything was fine, you know you still want to show your parents that you are fine.

“So I was doing one of those things like I was fine…until they left one day they were going back to Bengaluru and I cracked up and my mum asked me the usual hygiene questions like … is he a boyfriend?

“Is someone at work?” Did something happen? And I just didn’t have any answers…it was none of that. And it just came from an empty, hollow place. And she knew instantly, and I think for me, God was sent.

Speaking about how the medication helped her get better, Deepika added: “Coming back to me… I needed professional help.

“And then the journey continued. I was given to a psychiatrist, drugs that went back and forth for many months.

“I was reluctant to do this at first because there was so much stigma attached to mental illness, so it went on for a few months until I finally started taking meds and started feeling better. .”

Earlier during an appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati 13Deepika Padukone opened up to Amitabh Bachchan saying, “I was diagnosed with depression in 2014. Before, I felt weird that people didn’t talk about it.

“It was a stigma and people don’t even know much about it.”

“During this time, I realized that if I was going through this, then there would also be a lot of people who would be dealing with depression.

“My ambition in life was that if I could save just one life, then my goal was resolved. We’ve come a long way now.
